Women came out slightly ahead, 87.9% reading and writing against 80.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.9%), general labourer (6.6%), farm labourer (4.1%) and domestic servant (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.1% of all Kinahans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and professional.

Kinahans were predominantly Roman Catholic (83.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (12%).
