The 1911 Census recorded 437 people named Knowles in Ireland; roughly one in every 10,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 217 men and 219 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin was Knowles country: 26.8% of them (117 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (105), Cork (50), Laois (43) and Down (33).

The average Knowles in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 29.0 for men and 29.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Knowles literacy in 1911
Of the Knowleses whose literacy was recorded, 79.1% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 16.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (20), William, Patrick, Thomas and Michael. For women it was Mary (22), followed by Ellen, Margaret, Jane and Maggie.

The most common entry on a Knowles's census form was "Scholar"; 18.8% (82) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (6.9%), general labourer (5%), farm labourer (3.4%) and textile worker (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.4% of all Knowleses, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Knowles?
Most Knowleses, 55.4%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (24.9%), Presbyterian (17.2%), Methodist (0.9%) and Unitarian (0.9%).
