The average Knox in 1911 was 31.2 years old, 30.8 for men and 31.5 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (96), James, William, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (69), followed by Margaret, Annie, Elizabeth and Jane.

The most common entry on a Knox's census form was "Scholar"; 20.7% (367) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.2%), farm labourer (3.9%), textile worker (2.9%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.3% of all Knoxes, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.

What religion is Knox?

The largest religious group among Knoxes was Presbyterian, at 44.7%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (24.7%), Roman Catholic (21.5%), Methodist (6%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.5%).
