The 1911 Census recorded 3,514 people named L in Ireland, about 0.08% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 255th most common surname overall. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 2,114 men to 1,190 women. (A small number, 210, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with L in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Ls, 20% (704 people). Next came Cork (609), Antrim (269), Kildare (219) and Galway (168).
L average age in 1911
The average L in 1911 was 38.4 years old, 36.9 for men and 43.2 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
L literacy in 1911
Of the Ls whose literacy was recorded, 76.7% could both read and write, 4.6% could read but not write, and 18.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 82.2% reading and writing against 62.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
L common first names
The most common male names were J (519), P, M, T and W. For women it was M (338), followed by E, A, K and J.
L occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Ls was general labourer, 19.1% of them (671 people). Next came farmer (11%), domestic servant (9.2%), scholar / student (6.5%) and farm labourer (3.3%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 19.1% of all Ls, followed by agriculture, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is L?
Most Ls, 66.4%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (22.4%), Presbyterian (5%), Methodist (0.9%) and Jewish (0.1%).
