Women came out slightly ahead, 79.4% reading and writing against 75% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Lacken's census form was "Scholar"; 30% (18) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.7%), baker / confectioner (5%), dressmaker / milliner (3.3%) and farm labourer (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20% of all Lackens, followed by textiles & clothing, food & drink and domestic service.
