That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Lafferty literacy in 1911
Of the Laffertys whose literacy was recorded, 66.3% could both read and write, 7.2% could read but not write, and 26.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 68.6% reading and writing against 64.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (38), Patrick, James, Michael and Daniel. For women it was Mary (47), followed by Annie, Maggie, Sarah and Bridget.

The most common entry on a Lafferty's census form was "Scholar"; 21.5% (132) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.8%), farm labourer (8.6%), domestic servant (3.1%) and general labourer (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.6% of all Laffertys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

Laffertys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 90.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (4.6%), Presbyterian (3.3%), Non-Conformist (0.3%) and Baptist (0.2%).
