Of the Laides whose literacy was recorded, 74.6% could both read and write, 3.4% could read but not write, and 22% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 75.9% reading and writing against 73.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (10), Patrick, Richard, Thomas and William. For women it was Maggie (3), followed by Margaret, Katie, Sarah and Ailan Grace.

The most common occupation among Laides was farmer, 24.6% of them (16 people). Next came scholar / student (20%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (7.7%), domestic servant (1.5%) and dressmaker / milliner (1.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.6% of all Laides, followed by retail & commerce, professional and domestic service.
