Laird literacy in 1911
Of the Lairds whose literacy was recorded, 78.2% could both read and write, 4.6% could read but not write, and 17.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.8%), farm labourer (4.9%), general labourer (4.2%) and metal worker / engineer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.8% of all Lairds, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Laird?
Most Lairds, 51.3%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (24%), Roman Catholic (13.1%), Methodist (2.9%) and Unitarian (2.9%).
