The 1911 Census recorded 626 people named Lamb in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 287 men and 336 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Lamb in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Lambs, 24.9% (156 people). Next came Armagh (115), Cork (40), Monaghan (35) and Antrim (32).
Lamb average age in 1911
The average Lamb in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 30.0 for men and 31.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Lamb literacy in 1911
Of the Lambs whose literacy was recorded, 79.3% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 17.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 81.2% reading and writing against 77% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Lamb common first names
The most common male names were James (37), John, William, Michael and Patrick. For women it was Mary (33), followed by Margaret, Catherine, Bridget and Elizabeth.
Lamb occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Lamb's census form was "Scholar"; 19.5% (122) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (6.1%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4.5%), general labourer (4.3%) and textile worker (4.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 8.9% of all Lambs, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and retail & commerce.
What religion is Lamb?
Most Lambs, 58.1%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (25.1%), Presbyterian (8%), Methodist (5.6%) and Quaker (2.1%).
