The 1911 Census recorded 500 people named Laughlin in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,800 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 262 men and 238 women.

Antrim was Laughlin country: 31% of them (155 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Derry (72), Tyrone (69), Donegal (65) and Down (55).

The average Laughlin in 1911 was 31.4 years old, 29.5 for men and 33.3 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Laughlin literacy in 1911
Of the Laughlins whose literacy was recorded, 80.3% could both read and write, 2.9% could read but not write, and 16.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (28), James, Thomas, Patrick and William. For women it was Mary (27), followed by Annie, Ellen, Lizzie and Elizabeth.
Laughlin occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Laughlin's census form was "Scholar"; 17.8% (89) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.4%), farm labourer (4.8%), domestic servant (4.4%) and textile worker (4.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.4% of all Laughlins, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Laughlin?
The largest religious group among Laughlins was Roman Catholic, at 38.6%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (37%), Anglican (20.6%), Congregationalist (2.8%) and Methodist (0.4%).
