Of the Lavans whose literacy was recorded, 78.6% could both read and write, 1.8% could read but not write, and 19.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.8% reading and writing against 73.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (16), James, Martin, Michael and Thomas. For women it was Mary (22), followed by Bridget, Annie, Anne and Catherine.

The most common entry on a Lavan's census form was "Scholar"; 34.6% (79) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (21.5%), farm labourer (3.9%), no occupation / dependent (2.2%) and general labourer (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.4% of all Lavans, followed by professional, no occupation / dependent and domestic service.
