The Lavells were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 61.4% of them (51 people). Next came Antrim (12), Fermanagh (9), Monaghan (6) and Galway (3).

Of the Lavells whose literacy was recorded, 64.6% could both read and write, 4.9% could read but not write, and 30.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 71.1% reading and writing against 59.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (8), Thomas, Martin, Patrick and James. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Ellen, Margaret, Bridget and Jane.

The most common entry on a Lavell's census form was "Scholar"; 30.1% (25) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (22.9%), domestic servant (3.6%), farm labourer (2.4%) and no occupation / dependent (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.5% of all Lavells, followed by domestic service, no occupation / dependent and retired & pensioners.

Lavells were predominantly Roman Catholic (88%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (12%).
