Law in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 973 people named Law in Ireland; roughly one in every 4,500 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 481 men and 490 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Law in Ireland
Antrim was Law country: 37.2% of them (362 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (220), Fermanagh (97), Derry (74) and Dublin (61).

Law average age in 1911
The average Law in 1911 was 29.8 years old, 27.9 for men and 31.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Law literacy in 1911
Of the Laws whose literacy was recorded, 76.1% could both read and write, 5.7% could read but not write, and 18.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 77.4% reading and writing against 74.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Law common first names
The most common male names were William (47), John, James, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (33), followed by Sarah, Elizabeth, Annie and Margaret.
Law occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Law's census form was "Scholar"; 18.6% (181) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.5%), textile worker (5%), general labourer (4.4%) and farm labourer (4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.2% of all Laws, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
