The average Lawson in 1911 was 30.6 years old, 28.0 for men and 33.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Lawson literacy in 1911
Of the Lawsons whose literacy was recorded, 82.4% could both read and write, 3.9% could read but not write, and 13.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.4% reading and writing against 81.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (27), James, William, Joseph and Thomas. For women it was Margaret (14), followed by Mary, Elizabeth, Jane and Mary Jane.

The most common entry on a Lawson's census form was "Scholar"; 16% (80) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.4%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5.4%), textile worker (3.4%) and farm labourer (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.4% of all Lawsons, followed by retail & commerce, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Lawson?
The largest religious group among Lawsons was Presbyterian, at 47.1%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (35.1%), Roman Catholic (12.2%), Methodist (3.8%) and Baptist (0.2%).
