The 1911 Census recorded 241 people named Lawther in Ireland; roughly one in every 18,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 115 men and 125 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Lawthers were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 55.2% of them (133 people). Next came Antrim (99), Armagh (6), Derry (2) and Wicklow (1).

The average Lawther in 1911 was 33.2 years old, 30.1 for men and 35.9 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Lawther literacy in 1911
Of the Lawthers whose literacy was recorded, 86.3% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 11.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 87.4% reading and writing against 85.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (19), John, Thomas, William and Samuel. For women it was Mary (8), followed by Sarah, Annie, Margaret and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a Lawther's census form was "Scholar"; 15.8% (38) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (7.9%), farmer (5.8%), general labourer (4.1%) and farm labourer (3.3%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 14.1% of all Lawthers, followed by agriculture, metal & engineering and domestic service.
What religion is Lawther?
Most Lawthers, 53.5%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (37.8%), Methodist (3.3%), Agnostic (2.9%) and Unitarian (0.8%).
