Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common occupation among Layngs was farmer, 25% of them (17 people). Next came scholar / student (22.1%), other professional (4.4%), domestic servant (2.9%) and clerk / office worker (1.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25% of all Layngs, followed by professional, domestic service and clerical & administration.

Religion was only recorded for a minority of Layngs. Where it was, Roman Catholic was the most common (23 people), followed by Anglican (15), Presbyterian (11) and Methodist (5).
