That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Leacock literacy in 1911
Of the Leacocks whose literacy was recorded, 71.3% could both read and write, 13.9% could read but not write, and 14.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Leacocks were predominantly Anglican (76.6%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (17.1%), Roman Catholic (5.4%) and Methodist (0.9%).
