The 1911 Census recorded 320 people named Leathem in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 157 men and 162 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Leathem literacy in 1911
Of the Leathems whose literacy was recorded, 78.9% could both read and write, 4.8% could read but not write, and 16.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.2% reading and writing against 76.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (17), John, Robert, Samuel and Thomas. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Maggie and Sarah.
Leathem occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Leathem's census form was "Scholar"; 25.3% (81) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (15.9%), farmer (4.1%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.5%) and metal worker / engineer (2.2%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 18.1% of all Leathems, followed by agriculture, building & construction and retail & commerce.
What religion is Leathem?
Most Leathems, 58.8%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (19.1%), Presbyterian (16.9%), Salvation Army (4.1%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.9%).
