Of the Leckeys whose literacy was recorded, 75.1% could both read and write, 6.5% could read but not write, and 18.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.5%), textile worker (7.3%), general labourer (4.5%) and other maker / factory worker (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 9.8% of all Leckeys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.

Most Leckeys, 54.3%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (34.1%), Roman Catholic (6.2%), Protestant (2.7%) and Methodist (1.1%).
