The average Ledwidge in 1911 was 27.4 years old, 26.1 for men and 28.5 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Ledwidge literacy in 1911
Of the Ledwidges whose literacy was recorded, 79.3% could both read and write, 2.8% could read but not write, and 17.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 81.6% reading and writing against 76.4% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (19), James, Patrick, Christopher and Joseph. For women it was Mary (26), followed by Annie, Catherine, Elizabeth and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Ledwidge's census form was "Scholar"; 24.8% (63) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (5.9%), farmer (3.1%), domestic servant (2.4%) and other maker / factory worker (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 6.3% of all Ledwidges, followed by general labourers, domestic service and manufacturing & trades.
What religion is Ledwidge?
Ledwidges were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.4%) and Presbyterian (0.4%).
