Leech in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 661 people named Leech in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,600 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 313 men and 344 women. (A small number, 4, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Leech in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Leeches, 22.1% (146 people). Next came Louth (87), Galway (80), Meath (58) and Antrim (41).
Leech average age in 1911
The average Leech in 1911 was 29.8 years old, 28.5 for men and 31.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Leech literacy in 1911
Of the Leeches whose literacy was recorded, 81.3% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 14.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Leech common first names
The most common male names were John (43), James, Thomas, William and Patrick. For women it was Mary (44), followed by Bridget, Annie, Jane and Ellen.
Leech occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Leech's census form was "Scholar"; 17.7% (117) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.7%), general labourer (4.7%), domestic servant (3.8%) and farm labourer (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.5% of all Leeches, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Leech?
Leeches were predominantly Roman Catholic (77%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (16%), Presbyterian (3.8%), Methodist (0.9%) and Non-Conformist (0.6%).
