The 1911 Census recorded 327 people named Leen in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 173 men and 153 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Leens were heavily concentrated in Kerry, home to 94.2% of them (308 people). Next came Cork (6), Limerick (4), Monaghan (4) and Tipperary (3).

The average Leen in 1911 was 26.5 years old, 25.9 for men and 27.1 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Leen literacy in 1911
Of the Leens whose literacy was recorded, 75.5% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 21.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 76.7% reading and writing against 74.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (25), Michael, Patrick, Maurice and Thomas. For women it was Mary (33), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Ellen.
Leen occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Leen's census form was "Scholar"; 25.7% (84) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (20.5%), farm labourer (5.2%), general labourer (4.3%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26% of all Leens, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and domestic service.
