Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (23), John, Patrick, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (20), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Annie and Elizabeth.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.2%), textile worker (6.9%), domestic servant (3.4%) and farm labourer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.2% of all Lenaghans, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

Lenaghans were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.8%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (6.6%), Anglican (3.4%) and Methodist (0.6%).
