Of the L'Estranges whose literacy was recorded, 87.9% could both read and write, 1.7% could read but not write, and 10.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 89.2% reading and writing against 86.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (11), Joseph, Thomas, James and John. For women it was Mary (17), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Annie and Ellen; matching the national top five exactly.
