Men came out slightly ahead, 87.3% reading and writing against 83% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (12), Michael, Patrick, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Margaret, Maggie, Bridget and Hannah.

The most common entry on a Linane's census form was "Scholar"; 24.3% (25) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18.4%), domestic servant (9.7%), farm labourer (3.9%) and general labourer (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.3% of all Linanes, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and general labourers.
