The 1911 Census recorded 1,677 people named Little in Ireland, about 0.038% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 518th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 823 men and 848 women. (A small number, 6, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin had the largest share of Littles, 23.9% (401 people). Next came Fermanagh (245), Tyrone (204), Antrim (179) and Down (142).

Little average age in 1911

The average Little in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 29.5 for men and 30.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Little literacy in 1911

Of the Littles whose literacy was recorded, 80.2% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 15.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Little common first names

The most common male names were James (86), John, William, Thomas and Robert. For women it was Mary (76), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Sarah and Annie.

Little occupations in 1911

The most common entry on a Little's census form was "Scholar"; 20.5% (343) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.6%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3%), farm labourer (2.5%) and general labourer (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.5% of all Littles, followed by retail & commerce, textiles & clothing and domestic service.

What religion is Little?

The largest religious group among Littles was Anglican, at 41.4%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (30.4%), Presbyterian (14.9%), Methodist (7.2%) and Unitarian (2%).
