Lombard in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 283 people named Lombard in Ireland; roughly one in every 16,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 146 men and 137 women.
Counties with Lombard in Ireland
The Lombards were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 80.6% of them (228 people). Next came Dublin (17), Waterford (17), Wexford (8) and Kerry (4).
Lombard average age in 1911
The average Lombard in 1911 was 29.7 years old, 29.8 for men and 29.6 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Lombard literacy in 1911
Of the Lombards whose literacy was recorded, 83.5% could both read and write, 1.8% could read but not write, and 14.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Lombard common first names
The most common male names were John (19), James, Richard, William and Michael. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Ellen, Bridget, Margaret and Kate.
Lombard occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Lombard's census form was "Scholar"; 18% (51) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.1%), general labourer (6.4%), farm labourer (6%) and domestic servant (4.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.6% of all Lombards, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Lombard?
Lombards were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.8%).
