The 1911 Census recorded 1,631 people named Lonergan in Ireland, about 0.037% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 534th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 849 men and 780 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

The Lonergans were heavily concentrated in Tipperary, home to 61.5% of them (1,003 people). Next came Waterford (233), Limerick (133), Cork (104) and Kilkenny (63).

The average Lonergan in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 30.3 for men and 31.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18.1%), farm labourer (6.2%), general labourer (5.6%) and domestic servant (3.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.1% of all Lonergans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
