Long in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 4,325 people named Long in Ireland, about 0.099% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 194th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,161 men and 2,160 women. (A small number, 4, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Long in Ireland
Cork had the largest share of Longs, 24.9% (1,077 people). Next came Dublin (522), Limerick (323), Kerry (289) and Tipperary (289).
Long average age in 1911
The average Long in 1911 was 29.2 years old, 29.0 for men and 29.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Long literacy in 1911
Of the Longs whose literacy was recorded, 77.3% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 19.1% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Long common first names
The most common male names were John (308), James, Patrick, William and Thomas. For women it was Mary (311), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Bridget and Annie; matching the national top five exactly.
Long occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Long's census form was "Scholar"; 22.1% (957) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.1%), farm labourer (4.8%), general labourer (4.2%) and domestic servant (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.4% of all Longs, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Long?
Most Longs, 69.6%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (17%), Presbyterian (10.5%), Methodist (1.5%) and Protestant (0.2%).
