Women came out slightly ahead, 76% reading and writing against 72.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were metal worker / engineer (8.6%), textile worker (5.2%), general labourer (3.4%) and carpenter / joiner (1.7%). Grouped by sector, metal & engineering accounted for 8.6% of all Lowanses, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and manufacturing & trades.
