That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Women came out slightly ahead, 76.9% reading and writing against 71% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (17), Patrick, Cornelius, Denis and Michael. For women it was Mary (20), followed by Margaret, Johanna, Kate and Bridget.

The most common entry on a Lowney's census form was "Scholar"; 26.6% (54) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (20.2%), domestic servant (2%), retired / pensioner (2%) and general labourer (1.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.2% of all Lowneys, followed by domestic service, retired & pensioners and general labourers.
What religion is Lowney?
Lowneys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2%).
