Women came out slightly ahead, 80% reading and writing against 65.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (6.4%), general labourer (5.1%), domestic servant (3.8%) and farmer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 10.3% of all Lowreys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

Most Lowreys, 67.9%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (17.9%), Presbyterian (10.3%) and Methodist (3.8%).
