The 1911 Census recorded 217 people named Luby in Ireland; roughly one in every 20,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 120 men to 97 women.

Roscommon had the largest share of Lubys, 23% (50 people). Next came Dublin (36), Tipperary (35), Cavan (25) and Sligo (18).
Luby average age in 1911
The average Luby in 1911 was 26.7 years old, 26.6 for men and 26.9 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Luby literacy in 1911
Of the Lubys whose literacy was recorded, 80.9% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 15.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Luby common first names
The most common male names were John (21), Michael, Thomas, James and Patrick; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (17), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Lizzie.
Luby occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Luby's census form was "Scholar"; 27.2% (59) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.3%), general labourer (3.7%), domestic servant (2.8%) and farm labourer (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.4% of all Lubys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Luby?
Lubys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.9%).
