Lyhane literacy in 1911
Of the Lyhanes whose literacy was recorded, 66.9% could both read and write, 2.9% could read but not write, and 30.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 74.4% reading and writing against 60.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (21.3%), farm labourer (7.5%), domestic servant (2.9%) and herd / dairy worker (1.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 29.9% of all Lyhanes, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and retired & pensioners.
