The 1911 Census recorded 247 people named Major in Ireland; roughly one in every 18,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 139 women to 107 men. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Major in Ireland
Down was Major country: 30.8% of them (76 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Armagh (52), Antrim (42), Tyrone (23) and Derry (16).
Major average age in 1911
The average Major in 1911 was 27.2 years old, 28.4 for men and 26.3 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Major literacy in 1911
Of the Majors whose literacy was recorded, 77.5% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 17.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.6% reading and writing against 75.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Major common first names
The most common male names were James (15), John, Robert, Thomas and William John. For women it was Margaret (8), followed by Ellen, Sarah, Gertrude and Maggie.
Major occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Major's census form was "Scholar"; 24.7% (61) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.7%), textile worker (7.7%), general labourer (6.5%) and carter / driver / groom (1.6%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 9.7% of all Majors, followed by agriculture, general labourers and transport.
What religion is Major?
Most Majors, 53%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (27.5%), Roman Catholic (9.7%), Moravian (2.8%) and Unitarian (2.8%).
