Of the Malcolms whose literacy was recorded, 84.1% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 12.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 86.1% reading and writing against 82.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4.9%), metal worker / engineer (4.5%), textile worker (3.8%) and clerk / office worker (3.4%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 9.4% of all Malcolms, followed by agriculture, retail & commerce and metal & engineering.
What religion is Malcolm?
The largest religious group among Malcolms was Presbyterian, at 49.1%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (43%), Unitarian (2.6%), Roman Catholic (1.9%) and Congregationalist (1.5%).
