The 1911 Census recorded 2,101 people named Mallon in Ireland, about 0.048% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 422nd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,026 men and 1,072 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

Armagh had the largest share of Mallons, 24.4% (512 people). Next came Tyrone (419), Antrim (380), Down (162) and Longford (158).

The average Mallon in 1911 was 31.1 years old, 31.2 for men and 31.1 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Mallon literacy in 1911
Of the Mallons whose literacy was recorded, 75.8% could both read and write, 5.6% could read but not write, and 18.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.3% reading and writing against 73.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (144), Patrick, James, Thomas and Joseph. For women it was Mary (154), followed by Bridget, Annie, Catherine and Elizabeth.
Mallon occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Mallon's census form was "Scholar"; 18.6% (390) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.1%), textile worker (6.6%), general labourer (5.3%) and farm labourer (4.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.6% of all Mallons, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Mallon?
Mallons were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 92.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.8%), Methodist (0.6%), Presbyterian (0.6%) and Quaker (0.1%).
