Women came out slightly ahead, 81.2% reading and writing against 76% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10%), textile worker (8.3%), general labourer (6.7%) and domestic servant (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.3% of all Mansells, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and building & construction.
What religion is Mansell?
Mansells were predominantly Roman Catholic (76.7%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (15%), Methodist (6.7%) and Presbyterian (1.7%).
