The 1911 Census recorded 783 people named Marron in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,600 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 386 men and 397 women.

Monaghan was Marron country: 45.7% of them (358 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Louth (77), Antrim (73), Down (51) and Sligo (45).

The average Marron in 1911 was 32.4 years old, 33.0 for men and 31.7 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Marron literacy in 1911
Of the Marrons whose literacy was recorded, 74.9% could both read and write, 7.3% could read but not write, and 17.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Marron common first names
The most common male names were Patrick (59), James, Thomas, Peter and John. For women it was Mary (64), followed by Bridget, Annie, Catherine and Rose.
Marron occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Marron's census form was "Scholar"; 19.8% (155) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.8%), farm labourer (4%), general labourer (2.6%) and domestic servant (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22% of all Marrons, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Marron?
Marrons were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.5%), Plymouth Brethren (0.1%) and Presbyterian (0.1%).
