The 1911 Census recorded 297 people named Marsh in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 141 men and 156 women.

Dublin had the largest share of Marshes, 15.5% (46 people). Next came Antrim (39), Westmeath (29), Clare (26) and Down (26).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Marsh literacy in 1911
Of the Marshes whose literacy was recorded, 80.3% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 17.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (13), Thomas, James, Robert and William. For women it was Mary (13), followed by Catherine, Bridget, Elizabeth and Ellen.
Marsh occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Marsh's census form was "Scholar"; 20.2% (60) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (4.4%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4.4%), farmer (3.7%) and textile worker (3.4%). Grouped by sector, retail & commerce accounted for 5.7% of all Marshes, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and agriculture.
What religion is Marsh?
Most Marshes, 54.9%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (38%), Quaker (3.4%), Methodist (1.3%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.7%).
