Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (20), William, John, George and Robert. For women it was Mary (15), followed by Annie, Elizabeth, Maggie and Sarah.

The most common entry on a Mathers's census form was "Scholar"; 22.2% (90) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.9%), textile worker (8.6%), farm labourer (4%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.1% of all Matherses, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and professional.
What religion is Mathers?
The largest religious group among Matherses was Anglican, at 49.1%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (18.3%), Roman Catholic (16.3%), Methodist (14.8%) and Salvation Army (0.2%).
