Dublin had the largest share of McAdamses, 21.2% (25 people). Next came Derry (24), Down (12), Armagh (11) and Antrim (9).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the McAdamses whose literacy was recorded, 79.5% could both read and write, 3.4% could read but not write, and 17.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.6% reading and writing against 74% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (10), James, Andrew, Patrick and Thomas. For women it was Mary (4), followed by Mary A, Mary Anne, Agnus and Annie.

The most common entry on a McAdams's census form was "Scholar"; 21.2% (25) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (6.8%), farmer (5.9%), other public service (4.2%) and carpenter / joiner (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 7.6% of all McAdamses, followed by domestic service, general labourers and public service & defence.
What religion is McAdams?
Most McAdamses, 50%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (41.5%) and Presbyterian (8.5%).
