The McAnallys were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 51.4% of them (92 people). Next came Armagh (26), Down (21), Tyrone (16) and Derry (12).

The average McAnally in 1911 was 29.1 years old, 28.1 for men and 30.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McAnally literacy in 1911
Of the McAnallys whose literacy was recorded, 76.3% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 20.1% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80% reading and writing against 73.4% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (13), James, Patrick, Henry and Joseph. For women it was Mary (11), followed by Ellen, Margaret, Annie and Eliza.

The most common entry on a McAnally's census form was "Scholar"; 22.3% (40) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.4%), general labourer (6.1%), textile worker (5.6%) and domestic servant (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 10.6% of all McAnallys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and transport.
What religion is McAnally?
Most McAnallys, 57%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (24%), Anglican (12.8%), Plymouth Brethren (1.1%) and Unitarian (1.1%).
