That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the McAnns whose literacy was recorded, 77.1% could both read and write, 7.1% could read but not write, and 15.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 87.9% reading and writing against 67.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (8), Joseph, James, Thomas and Michael. For women it was Mary (6), followed by Bridget, Cathrine, Elizabeth and Maggie.

The most common entry on a McAnn's census form was "Scholar"; 22.2% (16) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (9.7%), farmer (8.3%), domestic servant (5.6%) and textile worker (4.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 9.7% of all McAnns, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is McAnn?
McAnns were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.9%). The remainder were mostly Baptist (6.9%), Anglican (2.8%) and Presbyterian (1.4%).
