The McAvoys were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 66.6% of them (440 people). Next came Antrim (109), Armagh (36), Tyrone (23) and Cavan (15).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the McAvoys whose literacy was recorded, 69.1% could both read and write, 7.8% could read but not write, and 23.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.8%), textile worker (10.1%), general labourer (4.5%) and farm labourer (4.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.5% of all McAvoys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.

McAvoys were predominantly Roman Catholic (73.7%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (14.1%), Anglican (8.8%), Methodist (1.2%) and Baptist (0.6%).
