Women came out slightly ahead, 71.2% reading and writing against 68.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (40), Patrick, James, Thomas and Hugh. For women it was Mary (37), followed by Annie, Bridget, Margaret and Catherine.

The most common occupation among McCafferys was farmer, 18.1% of them (98 people). Next came scholar / student (17.9%), farm labourer (6.3%), domestic servant (4.3%) and textile worker (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.8% of all McCafferys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is McCaffery?
McCafferys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 90.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.9%), Presbyterian (0.7%) and Methodist (0.2%).
