The 1911 Census recorded 588 people named McCall in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,500 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 292 men and 296 women.

Down had the largest share of McCalls, 23.6% (139 people). Next came Antrim (119), Armagh (92), Tyrone (53) and Dublin (38).

The average McCall in 1911 was 30.1 years old, 28.7 for men and 31.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McCall literacy in 1911
Of the McCalls whose literacy was recorded, 76.4% could both read and write, 5.1% could read but not write, and 18.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.9% reading and writing against 74% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
McCall common first names
The most common male names were John (41), James, Thomas, William and Patrick. For women it was Mary (30), followed by Margaret, Sarah, Annie and Catherine.
McCall occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a McCall's census form was "Scholar"; 16.8% (99) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.5%), general labourer (5.3%), textile worker (4.8%) and domestic servant (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.6% of all McCalls, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and building & construction.
What religion is McCall?
Most McCalls, 53.6%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (23.6%), Anglican (18.5%), Plymouth Brethren (1.5%) and Methodist (1%).
