The 1911 Census recorded 839 people named McCartan in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,200 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 414 men and 425 women.

The McCartans were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 64% of them (537 people). Next came Antrim (99), Leitrim (77), Tyrone (50) and Armagh (37).

The average McCartan in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 29.2 for men and 31.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McCartan literacy in 1911
Of the McCartans whose literacy was recorded, 76.8% could both read and write, 4.6% could read but not write, and 18.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (59), James, Patrick, Hugh and Daniel. For women it was Mary (54), followed by Catherine, Margaret, Bridget and Sarah.

The most common entry on a McCartan's census form was "Scholar"; 21.7% (182) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.4%), general labourer (4.9%), farm labourer (3.2%) and textile worker (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19% of all McCartans, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is McCartan?
McCartans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.3%), Presbyterian (0.6%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.1%).
