Men came out slightly ahead, 78.2% reading and writing against 75.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (51), John, Patrick, Thomas and Samuel. For women it was Mary (48), followed by Annie, Sarah, Margaret and Ellen.

The most common entry on a McCaughey's census form was "Scholar"; 20.2% (160) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (19.6%), farm labourer (5.7%), general labourer (3.3%) and textile worker (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.4% of all McCaugheys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is McCaughey?
Most McCaugheys, 54.2%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (28.8%), Anglican (12.1%), Plymouth Brethren (1%) and Baptist (0.9%).
