Of the McCleerys whose literacy was recorded, 83.6% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 13.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 86.2% reading and writing against 81.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (11.4%), farmer (8.3%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4.1%) and metal worker / engineer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 14.7% of all McCleerys, followed by agriculture, retail & commerce and metal & engineering.
What religion is McCleery?
Most McCleerys, 54.3%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (29.7%), Methodist (7.5%), Roman Catholic (2.3%) and Baptist (2.1%).
